The Spectacle // 2019
Intro for a fictional game in sketchform. A world based on the book by Guy Debord, The Society of The Spectacle.
“In the spectacle, which is the image of the ruling economy, the goal is nothing, development everything. The spectacle aims at nothing other than itself.” - Guy Debord
The video contains the process of the making and the game trailer itself.
From when I was a kid I have always been amazed by the surroundings and the story of a videogame. But especially the concept art around it. How do the main characters look like? What is their story and how will the game world be visualised, what is the sphere? The imagination of a game designer has no limits, everything is possible. I personally believe that your imagination and fantasy is something very powerful and may never be lost!
The spectacle is the everyday life we live in. The theory is that we are unable to ever escape the spectacle, but we can be aware of it. There are small events that gives us a glimpse of the ‘real’ world.
“The spectacle presents itself as something enormously positive, indisputable and inaccessible. It says nothing more than “which appears is good, that which is good appears.” The attitude which it demands in principle is passive acceptance which in fact it already obtained by its manner of appearing without reply, by its monopoly of appearance.”
The game has the intention to let people think about the way they are living. To make people aware of the spectacle. The game is a way to introduce the subject and then it is up to the player to do what they like with the gained information. Maybe some players will not be able to realize/handle this. The whole game will be a phylisophical big questionmark behind everything we do.
